Interviewing providers: What to ask

So often, my preggo friends don't know what questions to ask at their prenatal appointments. And more often than that, the appointments are short, somewhat rushed and usually don't run on time. Did you know that you can vet your providers? Heck, you can even change providers during your pregnancy if you aren't comfortable with your provider/practice.

Remember, you're paying them for a service, not the other way around. So you get to decide who is going to be on your birth team and your provider is included in that. Here are some questions you may consider asking when looking for a provider, or deciding if a particular provider is right for you.

  • What is your surgical birth rate?

  • How do you approach physiologic birth?

  • What methods do you use to manage the 3rd stage of labor?

  • How do you support movement in labor?

  • What is your induction policy?

  • How do you feel about doulas?

  • When my baby is born, how are newborn procedures handled?

These six questions are a GREAT starting point for discussions around your birth and will also get you thinking about what you want and do not want to be part of your experience. Your providers answers to these questions will be very telling about the support you will receive if you choose them to be a part of your birth team.

As always, if you have questions, you know where to find me!

Peace and love,

Doula Nicole
